Ethnic groups of Bangladesh

 Ethnic groups of Bangladesh

 Ethnic groups inhabiting in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is a small but populous country in South Asia

Indigenous Bengalis make up the majority of the population of Bangladesh.

In addition, there are many small ethnic groups, many of whom call themselves indigenous

Ethnic group The BBS 1974 report states that there are 24 ethnographic minorities and a total population of 8,96,626.  The tribes are Santal, Orao, Pahariya, Munda, Rajbangshi, Koch, Khasia, Manipuri, Tripura, Pankho, Garo, Hajong, Marma, Chakma, Thanchangya, Chak, Senduj, Mro, Khyang, Bam (Banjogi), Khumi, Lusai (  ).

On the other hand, the 1991 report acknowledges the existence of a total of 12,05,97 people from 29 ethnographic minorities.  Anthropological minorities are Banshi, Bam, Buna, Chak (Chak), Chakma, Koch, Garo, Hajong, Harijan, Khasia, Khyang, Khumi, Lusai, Mahato, Marma, Manipuri, Munda, Murung, Mro, Pahari, Pankho.  Rajbangshi, Rakhine, Santal, Thanchangya, Tipra, Tripura, Orao, Urua.

Notably, there is a lot of misinformation in it.  Such as Tipra and Tripura, Mro and Murung, Orao and Urua are the same anthropological minority but the report mentions them as separate anthropological populations.  This seems to have been due to a different style of English spelling in various reports.  There is no separate ethnic group called Buna, Harijan.  Although the main habitat of the Konch people is North Bengal, the Konchs are not mentioned in this section. [1]

According to the latest census and household census, the number of small ethnic groups has declined in 48 of the country's 64 districts.  In other 17 districts, the number has increased to one lakh 65 thousand 972 people.  However, this calculation does not match with the real situation.  As a result, questions have been raised about the acceptability of the census.  The 2011 census and census report used the term 'ethnic population' for small ethnic groups. [2]

The number of small ethnic groups in Bangladesh is about 15 lakh 7 thousand;  About one percent of the total population (1.11%).  Most of the small ethnic groups in Bangladesh live in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rajshahi areas.  The Chakmas are the largest ethnic group in Bangladesh.  There are also Garo, Tripura, Santal etc.
